  • Under the guidance and oversight of the camp nurse, the Healthcare Assistant is responsible for first aid care for campers and staff, dispensing of medications, following health and cleanliness standards, inventory of supplies, and maintaining health documentation in compliance with camp policy and regulatory requirements. This position supports the overall mission to provide a positive and affordable camping experience for youth in a safe, constructive, and welcoming environment.

    Essential Functions:

    1) Management/Staffing:
    - Performs evaluations on staff mid-summer and at the end-of-summer.
    - Actively participates in weekly staff meetings with camp leadership to identify and solve issues as well as recognize and celebrate successes.

    2) Policy and Procedures:
    - Abides by policies and procedures outlined in the Camp Downer Staff Policies and Procedures Handbook.

    3) Assists with the verification and record keeping of medical forms and information for all staff and campers in accordance with policy and regulatory standards.

    4) Assists with the secure handling and dispensing of prescription medications in an accurate and timely manner according to prescribed dosages and frequency.

    5) Performs basic first aid as required, including but not limited to:
    - Cleaning and disinfecting cuts, scrapes, and abrasions.
    - Tick checks and removal.
    - Treating insect stings and bites, sunburn, and skin irritations.
    - Applying bandages and compresses.
    - Administering basic over-the-counter medications as permitted by medical forms.
    - Providing observation and care to those resting/recovering in the Nurse’s Cabin.

    6) Maintains documentation of camper and staff health matters and visits to the Nurse’s Cabin:
    - Utilizes CampBrain’s Health Center to document camper and staff health matters.
    - Documents the dispensing of camper and staff medication.

    7) Provides guidance and elevates situations that need medical attention beyond what can be handled in camp. Identify the best course of action: clinic, hospital, 911, etc.

    8) Practices safe handling and storage techniques for medicines and medical supplies.

    9) Maintains recordkeeping and accurate inventory of first aid supplies on hand:
    - Assures that appropriate stock levels are maintained to fulfill summer needs.
    - Recommends purchases to replenish stock.
    - Checks and monitors expiration dates to ensure usage prior to expiration.
    - Properly disposes of expired medications.

    10) Performs daily evaluation of cabins to assess the cleanliness of cabins (Cabin of the Day) and attends to bedding that requires laundering.

    11) Preparing for End-of-Season:
    - Supports for the end-of-season storage of all Nurse’s Cabin and first aid supplies and equipment.
    - Conducts inventory of first aid supplies and equipment recommends purchases or replacement.
    - Reports any damage or repair work requiring attention during the off-season.
    - Supports the Camp Nurse with completing the Nurse’s Cabin and Camp Healthcare Annual Report and submits to the director for inclusion in Annual Report.
    - Ensures personal living space is free of personal belongings and is clean.
    - Obtains permission from camp leadership before departing.

    12) Other duties as assigned by camp leadership.

    Minimum Education:
    - High School Graduate.
    - Enrolled in post-secondary school or recent graduate.
    - Current enrollment in nursing, EMT, medical assistant or other healthcare-related program or recent graduate preferred.

    Minimum Work Experience:
    - Prior experience with pediatric care is preferred.
    - Experience in first aid and/or emergency management services.

    Certifications:
    - Current First Aid/CPR/AED Certification (Advanced level highly desirable).

    - Must be able to pass relevant background screening.

    Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
    - Long periods of moving and/or traversing both inside and outside, often on uneven terrain.
    - Constant positioning self to acquire supplies and materials.
    - Frequent moving of materials and equipment up to 25 pounds for various needs.
    - Moderate noise.
    - A variety of temperatures and weather conditions.
