This is Mitch's 38th year as Director at Camp Downer. Add to that his 9 years as a counselor at camps in Maine and Connecticut, and this will be his 47th year in camping. Until his retirement he worked for 36 years as a teacher, school counselor, and principal. His time away from camp is divided between Vermont, Montana, and Florida. When he's home in VT he builds furniture in his basement shop, directs musicals, and spends as much time as possible fishing. The loves of his life are his three grand daughters; Virginia, Audrey, and Brooklyn (all future Downer campers).
I have been involved with camping for over 35 years starting in Maine and Conn in the late 60s. I have three daughters and three granddaughters who are great fun. I spend my non camp time in Montana, Florida and Maine with my husband Mitch. I am a retired math teacher from Missisquoi Valley Union High School. I enjoy quilting, gardening, reading and card making.
My first summer at camp Downer was 1978. I was 8 years and I was hooked. Now I get to return every summer and my own children have come to share my love of Downer. I was a camper for many years. I completed the Counselor in Training program and was honored to join the staff in 1985. I am currently the Assistant Director, but have been on staff for over 20 years, and have held almost every position in camp at one time or another. I have worked the past 9 school years as an Elementary Special Educator at an alternative school for students with emotional and behavioral challenges. Returning to downer every summer reinvigorates my soul.
I am Grammy Carol, camp nurse. This summer I will supervise the medical team in the health office at camp covering for Nurse Ellen during her vacation time after completing her doctorate degree in Nursing. Congratulations to Ellen! This is my 19th year working at Downer and I love the staff and campers that come back here each year. As many of you know, I retired from Camp Downer last year. But you see that Camp Downer has not lost me.
Jon Thow is uber ecstatic to be bandaging scraped knees during his second summer as Assistant Nurse and third on staff. He also enjoys bonding over freezy-pops with campers who have sore throats and encouraging everyone to check for ticks! Keeping his favorite place healthy makes Jon smile; smiling is great.
I have a hypothesis that every summer I return to the Downer Forest I get another butterfly of excitement in my stomach. That means I have twenty fluttering around in there as I come back for my twelfth summer on staff and my first as Program Director. I can't wait to spend time with everyone in every corner of the forest, making camp feel as much like home to you as it does to me. I am so excited to join you on the Mohawk Walk, at the archery range, in the arts and crafts cabin, in the pool, or wherever your camp adventures take you! During the year I am an Administrative Assistant at Vermont Commons School, or you can also find me on the Burlington bike path, in the BCA clay studio, daydreaming about the dog I will hopefully own in the not-too-distant future, or conducting field work and research to find out what it takes to become a professional whistler.
This will be Alanna's 17th summer at camp, her 9th on staff, and her second as camp's Art Program Head. After graduating from the University of Vermont with a degree in Art Education, Alanna is ready to bring all of her artsy ideas, knowledge, and experience to the Downer State Forest! From getting jiggy with it in dance class, to helping campers find their inner journalist in journalism, to discovering the next Pablo Picasso in Arts and Crafts, Alanna is beyond excited to share her enthusiasm and passion for art with the Campers of Camp Downer!
Luke Burton has been kicking dodgeballs around the Camp Downer parking lot for more than 10 years. In his 5 years as a Counselor and Village Leader he familiarized himself with every aspect of camp from gliding a canoe smoothly across the pond to getting the perfect bounce on a hillside game of taps. Outside of camp Luke has studied at UVM, traveled extensively, choreographed and performed sporadically, made hundreds of cappuccinos, and is working on his first poetry chapbook. Now as the resident Connoisseur of rec games he will be helming the sports program. From archery to ultimate frisbee he can’t wait to honor tradition and reinvent the game of all things fun and sporty in the Downer forest.
After 8 years as a camper, and 4 years as a counselor, Amy knows the secret ingredient that makes Camp Downer such a fun and special place and incorporates it into all of the aquatics and nature programs. Amy loves being in and around the water and has her most fun when she is swimming. She has just spent 4 months researching the biodiversity of the Amazon rainforest in eastern Ecuador, and her passion for nature has never been stronger. Amy is also passionate about brownies, sunny days, dogs, ~chill~ music, raspberry jam, hiking, the universe and more! Amy is a student at Boston University where she is studying environmental science to pursue a career in environmental education.
Welcome to Camp! I'm Alexandra, returning to the magical Downer State Forest for my sixth year on staff and first year as your Lakeside Village Leader. I have a BFA in Visual Art which basically just means that I can start your gimp and help you take a properly exposed photo. As well as art being one of my favorite hobbies, I recently fell in love with working on a beautiful farm and learning all about food and agriculture. Working on a farm has taught me that my spirit animal is a two-week old Lamb, and that good soil can change the world! If you've been to camp you probably will recognize me for my love of sunflowers, which is still an avid part of my life. There's so many camp smiles just ready to happen, I can't wait!
Hi! I’m Henry, from Hartland, VT. This summer I’ll be the village leader of the Hillside boys village - I’ve been going to camp for almost a decade and am excited for another awesome summer! At camp, I love to tell stories, sing songs, and supervise young children throwing dodge balls. Outside of camp, I’m a rising junior at Tufts University in Medford, Ma. There, I love writing stories, skiing, all lawn games, and reminding people who say they are cold that it is probably much colder in Vermont. Hope to see you all at camp this summer!
James is returning to camp for his first summer since 2010! In his 6-year hiatus he has maintained his connection to camp with numerous visits and guest counselor appearances. While away from the Downer Forest, James graduated from UVM with a degree in Elementary Education and did some gallivanting around the globe. Some of the more exciting tidbits from James’ travels include visiting the Shire and hiking through Mordor while in New Zealand, Scuba Diving on the Great Barrier Reef and in the Virgin Islands and hiking in the Rocky Mountains! While at camp James likes to spend his time in any and all sports programs, shooting archery, and enjoying a little downtime in the arts and crafts cabin.
Max is still in shock that he is lucky enough to be spending his summer at the best place on earth. He loves taking walks through the magical Downer State forest at camp, as well as shooting some hoops on the courts and slaying dragons at the archery range. Max will be a senior at Champlain Valley Union High School in the fall where he participates in soccer, hockey, and lacrosse. He is an avid fly fisherman and co-founder of the famous VT Fishing. This year Max hopes to learn the ways of the white river and catch the biggest trout in Vermont. He can't wait for this summers journey as a Camp Downer counselor.
Hello, I'm Chloe! This will be my first year on staff and I'm super excited! My favorite camp activities include hiking and canoeing. When I'm not soaking up the sun in the Downer woods I am at my home in Brooklyn, NY finishing up my final year of high school at the High School of Art & Design. My hobbies include photography, guitar, and developing new ways to expand my creative brain. I can't wait to get to Downer and embark on an amazing summer!
Dawson's history at Camp Downer has a rough start. On his very first day, he fell out of a Rec Hall window in full view of the entire camp. In the following years he would proceed to fall into the pond multiple times and hear his fair share of scary stories, even telling some of his own. Dawson has attended Camp Downer since 2009 and is excited to continue his time there!
Hi friends! My name is Gabbi and this will be my sixth summer in the magical Downer State Forest, and my first on staff! At camp, you can find me on the basketball court playing an intense game of knockout or in the rec hall singing camp songs! When I'm not at camp, I attend Northfield High School where I am a member of Student Council, Language Club, and National Honor Society! You can usually catch me in the gym playing basketball, and if I'm not there, I'm either volunteering with Special Olympics, running, or spending time with family. I love all animals, especially dogs! I can't wait to spend yet another summer at camp filled with happiness, laughter, and friends!
Elsa is super excited to be returning to the Downer State Forest this summer for her 7th year at camp and her first year as a counselor. She is a rising junior at Elon University down in sunny North Carolina, where her main hobbies include counting trees, doodling, wearing Crocs, and eating pistachios. She can't wait to spend another summer at camp with the greatest people in the happiest place!
Hi, My name is Chris DeWolfe! I graduated from St. John's High School in Shrewsbury, MA, and my rookie second as a Camp Downer counselor. I enjoy playing and listening to music, laughing with people, and being out in the woods. At school, I am a member of the Model United Nations, and the Audio Production Club. I look forward to having a great time at camp this summer!
Hey there, I'm Jackie and will be returning for my3rd summer on staff! Aye, it has been a long wait. I'm incredibly excited to return to ye olde Camp Downer and unscroll her countless hidden treasures. I look forward to another summer of enjoying nature fresh air and dirty hiking feet. I miss the music, dance, and hysterical laughter that surround every inch of her woods. At camp, I love to trek the uncharted territory of the trails, unearth the magic doubloons of jewelweed, and eat some homemade salsa. In the fall, I plan to voyage to the not-so-distant land of Connecticut, where I will be attending Wesleyan University for some readin', some studyin', and some other cool stuff. A few of my favorite things include grilled cheese, the outdoors, both fake and real mustaches, the smell of mulch in springtime, and most importantly, Camp Downer. Can't wait see all you there this summer!
This will be Nathan’s 12th summer in the Downer State Forest and his third on staff. Nathan spends his life outside of his summers at camp in the beautiful state of Maine. He is an undergraduate student in the School of Marine Sciences at the University of Maine Orono. At UMO, Nathan studies the biology of marine fishes, and the geographical language and characteristics of our country’s beaches and coasts. In his free time, he plays for his University’s collegiate rugby team and plays disc golf on his campus’ course. As summer gets closer and closer, Nathan gets more and more excited for eight weeks filled with disc golfing, fish catching, nature jaunting, arrow launching, rock petting, turtle finding, and that good old Downer cabin living. He cannot wait to see all of your smiling faces this summer, in the place that outshines the sun!
Hey y'all its Nina! This is my tenth summer at camp and my second on staff and I'm so excited to spend my summer in the Downer forest. When I'm not at camp I spend my time at Amherst Regional High School, playing volleyball and lacrosse, while also being on student government. While at camp you can find me either on the rec field or the basketball court playing a mean game of dodgeball. I can't wait to see all of y'all at camp this summer for the best weeks of the year!
Jane is still in disbelief that she gets to work at Camp Downer this summer, as she is convinced that it is the greatest place in the world and has yet to be proven otherwise. This will be her eighth year at camp, and her first on staff. From September to June she can be found taking pictures of her dogs, slogging along at about one hundredth place in Nordic skiing races, and trying to explain how excited she is to be returning to camp to polite but disinterested listeners. She is going into her final year at Middlebury Union High School. Her favorite camp activities are water aerobics, chatting at meals, and making friends and friendship bracelets in arts and crafts.
Hey there, it's Amy! This will be my second year as a counselor and fifth year at Camp Downer. My favorite activities include hiking through the woods, making music, and petting cats. When I'm not at camp, I'm spending my time at Mascoma Valley Regional High School where I'm in student council, varsity track and varsity volleyball, and jazz band. Camp is where I'd rather be though where I enjoy archery, dodge ball, and canoeing. I'm very excited to see you all this summer!
Hey friends! This is my nineth summer at camp and second as a counselor. When I'm not living among the trees at camp I'm attending Saint Johns High School in Massachusetts. There, I am in the audio club and on the lacrosse team, and we are proud to be among the top 20 teams in the state. Some call me a visor enthusiast, and you will see me sporting my vast visor collection this summer. My other hobbies include playing guitar and staying thoroughly hydrated throughout the sweltering summer months. Can't wait to have a great summer at camp!
Hey Youse! That is how they say “you all” where I’m from, about 400 miles south of Downer in Philadelphia, PA. My name is Joe, and I have taken the long car ride up to Camp for seven summers, and this will be my first as a counselor. While I’m at Camp, you can catch me singing in the Rec Hall, or honing my skills on the disc golf course. In the fall, I will enter my junior year at St. Joe’s Prep, in North Philadelphia, where I spend time as an actor in the Cape and Sword Drama Society, and the Managing Editor of our school newspaper. I’m so excited to finally be back in the Downer State Forest this summer! Can’t wait to see you there!
As a Philadelphian, Liam is quite excited to get out of the big city and spend the summer in the beautiful forests of Vermont. This summer marks Liam's 8th year at camp and his second full summer on staff, after working for part of the summer in the kitchen in 2015. He just recently graduated St. Joseph's Prep in North Philadelphia. In the fall, Liam will be moving to New York City to attend Fordham University in the Bronx. Among Liam's favorite activities are storytelling, arching, cabin-dwelling, game-playing, and fun-having - so Downer is really Liam's ideal environment. He is thrilled and excited to be spending the summer doing the greatest job on earth and would like all parents to know that he has never run with scissors.
Hi there, my name is Ava. I am a camp counselor in the summer, and come winter winds, I am a full-time, careerist explorer. In March the spring flowers began blooming sunshiny pockets in the backwoods of Transylvania, Romania. I lifted my left ear to the west, set my pick axe down, and knew I must soon return to the golden green Downer forests I love the most. I've certainly learned some skills while traveling about. They include: cooking perfect porridge, fence building, mandolin noodling, noodling in general, toilet polishing, recounting the entire plot of Holes by Louis Sachar, sheet rock, and conversational French. I can teach you these things, if you want. I am very excited to be home with you all this summer; it will no doubt be star spangled and joyous. See you soon!
Julia is absolutely stoked to be returning to Camp Downer for her 6th summer! Some of her favorite activities at camp include dancin’ in the pool, arts ‘n craftin’, and boatin’. She loves sunshine, flowers, breakfast foods, adventuring, and the Boston Red Sox. Julia is from Ithaca, New York but spends most of her time outside of camp running around Middlebury College where she will be a sophomore in the fall. She is pumped to meet all of you and spend the summer laughing and having fun in the Downer State Forest!
Hello everyone! Sawyer here, and I am delighted to be returning for my 6th year in the beautiful Downer forest for my first year on staff! As someone who has grown up in the rustic woods of Richmond, my favorite days at camp are those that include nature walks, flower picking, and serenades from our beautiful singing classes. Outside of camp you are most likely to find me swimming in a lake, pool, or any body of water I can find! During the less exciting seasons of fall, winter, and spring I attend Mount Mansfield Union High School. I am on the dance team, track team, and the most likely to wear pajamas to school team. My favorite subject has always been Spanish, and I cannot wait to travel to South America to really learn the language and all of the different cultures! Summer has always been my favorite season, and I can't wait to share what I am sure is going to be the best summer yet with all of you!
Hi, my name is Zoe! This will be my seventh, splendid summer at sunny camp and my first on staff! I am exceptionally excited to embark on and embrace the expedition at good ol' Camp Downer this summer. Usually you can meet me in the mystical mountains of Waterbury. Most of time I am gracefully gliding and gallivanting the glorious dance floors of Stowe Dance Academy. Other times I am fighting the furious forces of climate change. During the non-summer I am hopping the happenin', harmonious halls of Harwood Union High School. At camp you'll catch me cautiously canoeing the currents of the pond or carefully constructing clever, cozy fairy houses. See you soon this summer!
Hello!! My name is Riley, I am ecstatic to be coming back to spend the whole summer at Camp Downer. This will be my eighth year going to camp, this being my first on staff. At home, in Morrisville VT, I love to play Frisbee with my friends, hike, and be in nature. I also do like food more than your average consumer, which is fitting for a Kitchen Aide.
My name is Shane and this is my seventh year of camp and first on staff. This year I will be working in the kitchen with the boys. I will be a senior at South Burlington High School in the Fall. I am so excited for my summer!
I am ecstatic to be returning to Camp in my new role as Registrar. I first attended camp as a camper in 1996 and in one way or another have figured out how to return each summer. Some of the valuable life lessons Camp Downer have bestowed upon me are: 1. always make sure you have a large costume closet 2. Downer Dirt is a badge of honor 3. The friendships formed in these woods are unlike any other. No matter how many summers I return, the magic of Camp never diminishes.
After 10 years away from camp, the prodigal son returns. Phil is back at camp this summer assisting the Registrar in all matters of registry and campbrain tomfoolery. Phil's favorite cabins are 5, Old Nature, and 15. His favorite classes include cloud watching, lunch, and water balloon making. Look for Phil on the first light of the fifth day, at dawn look to the East.
